Motability is a national UK charity, which helps disabled people and their families to become mobile. It was set up on the initiative of the Government in 1977, to provide cars and powered wheelchairs to disabled people.
Who is eligible?
Anyone who is in receipt of the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement can apply.
Children from five years old and non-drivers can also apply for cars as passengers, provided they receive the correct allowance. www.motability.co.uk
What does it cost?
The vehicles are supplied (on contract hire or hire purchase at the lowest possible cost through favourable terms negotiated with the manufacturers, banks and insurance companies. Some of the cars on the scheme can be paid for entirely with the Allowance, but others require a cash deposit at the start of the agreement.
Extra Financial Help
Motability's charitable fund can help if you are unable to afford the advance payment on some lease vehicles, in some instances, towards driving lessons and adaptations to the vehicle. Grants can be made help you meet your basic mobility needs.
Special Requirements
If you have more severe disabilities and require a specially adapted vehicle, you may qualify for a grant from the Government's Mobility Equipment or Drivers Funds which are administered by Motability
